Jackson thought that under the Constitution, Congress had no authority to charter a National Bank. Further he saw evidence that the bank, which could make loans to individuals, engaged in political activity, making favorable loans to people in power in order to gain privileges for its officers. Consequently he pressured Congress to not renew its charter, which they did in 1832. However the charter was not set to expire until 1836. Rather than wait for the bank to "die a natural death" i, he ordered the Secretary of the Treasury to withdraw all federal funds from the bank in 1834 in order to hasten its demise.
