He held a number of jobs including saddle-making when he was 14. But he studied law and in 1787, age 20, he was admitted to the North Carolina bar, and became a country lawyer in Jonesborough VA (Western District) which later became part of Tennessee. In 1788 he became a legal prosecutor and continued that role in the government of the Southwest Territory. He was elected to both houses of Congress and from 1798 to 1804 served on the Tennessee Supreme Court and simultaneously in the Tennessee militia.
