In 1864 the Civil War was going on and the Democrats had a Peace candidate running on their side, the Republicans chose Johnson, a Democrat, because he shared Lincolns war goals, and he might sway many Democrats to vote for Lincoln.

Johnson was a US Senator from Tennessee but did not resign his position when Tennessee seceded. He was a strong supported of the federal union.
