Ad to this that the poor buggers that volunteered had no idea where they were going or for how long it was all a bit of an adventure at the start and the only way a lot of young Australians were going to be able to see Europe.
Canada was effectively a British colony during WWI. It was called upon to send soldiers and supplies to fight.
