The vast majority of Australians were of British background and saw Britain as home, even though they had never been there . so when Britain got into a war Australia felt obliged to help them in their time of need. Ad to this that the poor buggers that volunteered had no idea where they were going or for how long it was all a bit of an adventure at the start and the only way a lot of young Australians were going to be able to see Europe.
