Their Cheiftain Tenoch had a vision to lead The Aztecs to a swampy Island in north Mexico. Enemies could not get to them easily, so therefore protection as well

It was to stop enemy's from getting to them. It would take such a long time to swim that the Aztecs would spot them and capture them. Then they would sacarifice them.
