Jesus was a descendant of David. Calling him a "son of David" meant he was descended from David.

This is similar to the way the Jews are sometimes referred to as the Children of Israel, even centuries after Israel had died. It is a poetic way of referring to descendants but the name of a high profile ancestor.

On the surface, blind Bartimaeus was somehow gifted to know that Jesus was descended from King David and chose specifically to make this reference when asking Jesus to have mercy on him. The fact that he asked for mercy (eleos), rather than asking to be given his sight, is another puzzle that requires insight beyond mere speculation.

In fact, this story is full of puzzles. Bartimaeus must have been a Jew, since Bartimaeus is Aramaic for 'son of Timaeus', a point that Mark emphasises by repeating 'son of Timaeus' in the Greek language (translated into English in our Bibles). However, Timaeus is not a Jewish name, but a Greek one, and was used by Plato as the name of an important dialogue about nature and creation.

The story of blind Bartimaeus first appeared in Mark's Gospel, contrasted with the story of Legion in a pair of events in the gospel's framework, parallel structure. A parallel structure is a literary sequence in which an opening set of events is contrasted with another, parallel set of events that mirrors the first. The purpose of a parallel structure is to link, by association, the two events of each pair in the minds of the readers, in order to create emphasis or develop a theme that would otherwise not be apparent. The two stories comprise pair L in the following summary of the framework parallel structure of Mark:

A . John explains the coming of Jesus (Mark 1:1-8)

A' .The young man explains the departure of Jesus(16:6-8)

In Mark's Gospel, only outsiders such as demons, the high priest and the centurion refer to Jesus as the Son of God, perhaps to avoid having Christians accused of blasphemy at this very early stage in church history. Notice that in event L, the demons who possessed the man called Jesus "Son of the most high God." In the parallel account of Bartimaeus, this was to be avoided, so the nearest, safe parallel was to call him "Son of David."It is the only time that anyone in the entire gospel calls Jesus "Son of David."
