The white flag with a horizontal red stripe in the middle was used in 1918, during Nazi occupation from 1942-44 and from 1991-95. The current flag, adopted June 7, 1995 is the same that was used by the Communists from 1951-91 but without the sickle and hammer. Opponents of President Alexander Lukashenko use the red and white flag, and the government removes it for the official reason that it was used by the Nazis.
