Historians are not really sure of the reason, except that the Crown owned money to the first Lord Baltimore, who was an Irish Lord. He had been Secretary of State, but when he converted to Catholicism, he lost his position. Some historians believe that the crown gave him the grant of land in lieu of paying back the money, other historians believe that the King was giving it to him as compensation for being stripped of the title of Secretary of State. He was the only Catholic peer ever given such a grant.
