Most of us are taught that Columbus wanted to find a sea route to India by going around the world, rather than going down around Africa. His calculations of the circumference of the earth told him that it should be doable. On the other hand, I think he wanted to get off the war with the Moors. The year that he landed in America, the last battle was held in Granada.
