Best Answer

Columbus was looking for a more direct route to India. No one knew about the continents in the way. He assumed he had reached his goal. He refused to believe he had not found India. This is why the continents are named after Amerigo Vespucci.

He made four trips. He never landed on the North American continent to call it anything.
