His purpose was to conquer the Taino tribe and colonized the region. This voyage was a massive effort bringing horses, sheep, and cattle and settlers. In February 1495 he took 1600 Arawak slaves. Of these 500 were sent to Spain, 200 died on the way. The rest were kept slaves for the settlers.

When Columbus left Hispaniola in 1493, he left about 39 men in a fort settlement named La Navidad, which was in the northern part of present-day Haiti. On his return, Columbus found the fort destroyed and many of his men were dead. The Taino people had killed them.
Not really were the 39 men he left on Hispaniola considered a colony and when he returned they were all dead. The first North American colony that survived would be Jamestown established in 1607.
Columbus didn't need to adapt to any thing. First, he NEVER was in America and he was WAS on an island he named Hispaniola. His landing on the island only lasted days not months. He did leave 39 men but when he returned they were dead. They never intended to adapt or change, if anything, they would have expected the people or place they landed in to change.
