Simon was called "of Cyrene", a region in Africa, and was one person. He carried the Cross because Roman Soldiers had the right to force locals to carry things for them up to one mile.
The man who was compelled to bear the cross of Jesus by the Romans was called Simon, of Cyrene[Matthew 27:32]. Cyrene was, and possibly still is, a town in Libya where at the time a large Jewish settlement existed. Jews from this area were in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost[Acts 2:10]. There appears to be no hard evidence to say what the colour of Simon's skin was. Wikipedia has a comprehensive write up about the story.>

When Jesus was finished speaking, he told Simon to go out to deeper water and cast his nets. Simon stated that they had fished all night long without catching any fish. But then Simon agreed saying, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets." (Luke5:5). The nets were suddenly filled with fish and began to break. They signaled their partners in the other boat for help. They came and filled both boats that they began to sink. "When Simon saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me Lord; I am a sinful man." (Luke 5:8). Jesus replied in (Luke 5:10), "Don't be afraid: from now on, you will catch men". Upon pulling the boats to shore, Peter and his partners left everything and followed Jesus.
