Dick Grayson stopped being Robin and eventually became Nightwing because he wanted to establish his own identity and operate as a solo hero. He felt that he had outgrown the role of being Batman's sidekick and wanted to take on greater responsibilities in fighting crime.

One night when the Flying Graysons were performing in the circus when the youngest member of their family Dick Grayson was about to jump in with his parents the rope holding his parents broke, Feeling sorry for Dick Grayson, Bruce Wayne adopted him and paid for his parents' funeral. One night when Dick was in the living room sited on the couch in front of the fireplace he saw Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred go out of a secret passage so he hid and when Alfred was gone he went to check were the passage went and when he did he found out it led to the bat-cave. Right on cue the bat-mobile entered and dick hid when he was about to go back he saw that batman was in front of him and he found out Bruce Wayne was batman and on the same night batman was supposed to stop Dick's Parents' Murderer when he was trapped by the person he was after and coming to batman's rescue was dick dressed up in the costume his mother made for him the night they died. then after that they decided to work together but batman said he might need a nickname then he suggested Robin like the bird remembering what his mom had said.
