During the election of 1952 Dwight Eisnehower was viewed by many in the Republican party as too centrist. Many of his political views were still unknown to the right wing of the party who largely supported Sen. Taft for the Republican nomination. The critical issues were his support of NATO and the Marshall Plan and his percieved friendships with Stalin. To secure this portion of the party he chose Nixon who in addition to being politically astute was a favorite of the right wing of the party. In reality Eisenhower likely would have won regardless of who he chose and he and Nixon had a very distant and cold relationship.
