James Monroe was famous because he was the fifth president of the USA. He was also the last of the Revolutionary War heroes to be elected as President. He was famous for the establishment of the Monroe Doctrine, which warned European countries to avoid colonization of the western hemisphere. This helped latin-American countries become independent, and was not back by any military power (the united states did not have much military, they had only gained their independence 4 decades earlier). I think the Monroe Doctrine is what most people remember him for.
