Other forms of wealth were important too -- silver, precious stones, etc. Another reason was revulsion at the Aztec practice of human sacrifice, coupled with a desire to convert them to Christianity. The Spanish also wanted to settle the Americas, and they began doing that rather quickly. By 1551 they had founded a university in Mexico City. The Aztec Empire stood in their way.
