France and Spain supported the patriot cause because of their own land holdings in North America. They did not want to see the British is control of such a large portion of the continent. Presumably, they wanted to stay in the good graces of the people living there, as well.

Men of them (France and Spain mainly) where both enemies of the British an they saw it as a way to weaken Britain. They literally took the phrase "My enemies enemy Is my friend" to heart.
