The Germans wanted to celebrate their victory, by holding the surrender ceremony in the same railway car the Germans surrendered in 1918. Hitler achieved his revenge and his greatest triumph in the war. Petain, who had been revered by the French in the first world war, was hanged by his countrymen for treason after the war.
