France fell the Germans and Italians in June 1940. Hitler decided that most of the country would be administered by the Vichy Governmetn under Petain. Not sure the exact date of capitulation. The Germans wanted to celebrate their victory, by holding the surrender ceremony in the same railway car the Germans surrendered in 1918. Hitler achieved his revenge and his greatest triumph in the war. Petain, who had been revered by the French in the first world war, was hanged by his countrymen for treason after the war.
