McClellan was the Candidate nominated by the Democratic Party to challenge President Lincoln in the presidential election of 1864. He supported the continuation of the war and the restoration of the Union (but not the abolition of the slavery) and

not the peace at any price.

Indeed the platform of the Party, written by the notorious Clement Vallandigham, claimed an immediate armistice and a settlement which had to be negotiated with the Confederacy. That forced McClellan to repudiate that platform leading to a deep division of the Democrats.
