In my opinion, Andrew Jackson chose not to run for presidency in 1836 since he had failed enough. From weakening the Second National Bank of the United States to trying to stop the inflation.
He wanted to retire (and didn't want to get talked out of retirement again).
John Adams won in 1796 and became the president when Washington left office in 1797.
George Washington set this precedent which was observed until Franklin Roosevelt decided to run for a third term in 1940.
John Adams won this election and Thomas Jefferson by finishing second became the vice-president.
For President.

No, George Washington ran unopposed in both of his presidential elections.
George Washington was unanimously elected both times that he ran for U. S. President. He received a vote from each of the 69 electors in 1789 and from each of the 132 electors in 1792. Although he did not run for reelection in 1796, he received two votes that year.
