For money, and out of resentment for the lack of recognition for his military service, particularly at Saratoga. Arnold had been prominent in the victory at Saratoga but the overall American commander, Gates, did not mention Arnold in his reports to Congress, hogging all the credit and glory for himself.

How much Arnold's second wife, Peggy Shippen, had to do with his treachery has never been completely proven. He married her in 1779, when he was 38 and she was 18. He was permanently crippled by his war wounds and under charges for corruption and malfeasance in financial dealings while in command at Philadelphia; she was the prettiest girl in Philadelphia and the daughter of a prominent Tory, Judge Shippen. Peggy was certainly used to the finer things in life, and was something of a naughty girl. The British had occupied Philadelphia for nine months before Arnold was in command, and during that time Peggy was courted by the British officer John Andre. It was Andre who was caught the next year, 1780, with papers and plans he had obtained from Arnold, and hanged. Even after the British had evacuated Philadelphia the Philadelphia girls had found ways to keep in touch by letter with their British boyfriends. When Andre was found with the incriminating papers Washington and Alexander Hamilton were due at Arnold's house on a tour of inspection. Arnold realized the jig was up and fled to a British warship in the Hudson River, leaving Peggy at home holding the bag, so to speak. She must have been terrified, but brazened it out and pretended to be "deranged". Washington, still figuring out what was going on and not wanting to believe Arnold's betrayal, went up to Peggy's bedroom, where she raved wildly, ran around the room practically naked, and generally created such a scene as the nearly 50 year old Washington certainly had never seen out of the plump widow woman he had married. Washington was no match for a beautiful, scheming half naked temptress. Peggy was put in a boat with her new baby and rowed out to the British ship to join her husband, so, she got clean away.

What role did electoral college play in George election to the presidency?

If you are asking about Washington he was elected by Congress. In 1789 there were no elections held for president. Congress did not feel that voters weren't educated enough to pick a president.
