Britain (and to a lesser extent Ireland, officially neutral) represented a marshalling point for Allied armies and war material, close enough to bomb mainland Europe and Germany, and to project seapower around the continent. The delay and eventual cancellation of the invasion meant that American and Allied forces could attack the German military presence in Europe for the entire second half of the war.

The RAF successfully defeated the Germans in the Battle of Britain in late Summer 1940. The end of the battle allowed Britain to rebuild its military forces and establish itself as an Allied stronghold. Britain later served as a base from which the Liberation of Western Europe was launched.

By 1940, German forces had overrun most of Europe except for Britain. No other country was prepared to become involved in what was seen as a European war. Therefore Britain stood alone against the very powerful German forces and spent the time re-arming and retraining its armed forces. Nothing much happened until December 1941 when Germany declared war on the USA and they entered the war. Britain was no longer alone.
