The Germans surrendered primarily due to the onslaught of the Russians on the eastern front, the Russians were responsible for the destruction of the wehrmacht and this is why Germany surrendered, the western allies contribution is hugely overstated.

When you have the Allied forces and the Russian forces meet in the centre of Berlin and shaking hands, and Hitler dead by suicide, I think even the most die-hard Nazis realised that it was time to give up.
