40 days and 40 nights
The covenant god made with Noah was that he would not destroy the earth, with a flood that would last for 40 days and nights. The rainbow is the sign of it.
In my own opinion, the great flood composed of 2 theories. One being the repetition of the "Great Flood" where God cleanses the earth by means of raining for 40 days and 40 nights. And secondly the theories of some scientists that because of Global Warming the ice from North Pole will become a total meltdown which would cause a Great Flood that will flood the whole earth itself.

After the flood in Genesis, God makes a covenant with Noah and his descendants, promising to never again destroy the earth with a flood. This covenant is symbolized by the rainbow in the sky as a sign of God's promise.
God promised not to flood the earth again as a sign of his covenant with humanity after the Great Flood. This covenant symbolizes God's mercy and desire to not destroy the world in such a catastrophic way.
The promise made by god to both Noah as well as all of his decedents . Is that now that the flood of 40 days and 40 nights are over and all of mankind was wiped out in the flood. He put a rainbow in the sky as a simble that he would never destroy the world by a flood again.
You must remember that there want be a flood lasting 40 days and 40 nights of heavy rain ever.
The rains sent by god lasted for exactly 40 days and 40 nights. After that the rain stopped. And all the land was covered with water.
He destroyed it by the flood during Noahs days, but the fanily and the animals were on the ark to continue life.
After the flood, God made a covenant with Noah, promising to never again destroy the earth with a flood. God also instructed Noah to be fruitful and multiply, and to fill the earth.
