Why did God make animals?

God gave humans dominion over every other living thing on earth. This couldn't be true, of course, since millions of other species existed for millions of years before humans existed. But this verse is used by fundamentalist Christians to justify their mistreatment of other species and disregard for the environment. After all, they believe that God created the other species just for them, so they can do whatever they please with them.

EDIT - The evidence for there being millions of years on the earth is lacking significantly. It is not a fact made known by science it is an assumption coming from many scientists using certain parts of science who need millions of years in order for evolution to be plausible. The fundamentalist Christians who use that verse to justify the mistreatment of animals and the environment have twisted the Scripture from its original meaning. It doesn't mean man can do whatever he wants to animals, it means that God has made us stewards over the earth, and our mistreatment of it is not justified by this verse.
