Gustave Eiffel wasn't the original designer of the tower (the original design was from one of his employees). However he championed the tower, to be the beacon and the symbol of French building technology for the world's exhibition fair, held in Paris in 1889.

The Tower was built in part to commemorate the anniversary of the beginning of the French Revolution in l789. It was built for the Paris exhibition of l889. Eiffel was an established civil engineer at the time, and the tower used the most up to date structural devices- such a Worthington pumps and Otis elevators- both made in USA and New Jersey, in fact. There was also an abortive 986 foot Granite tower designed by a rival- evidentlaly a design competition like that with automobiles and defense contracts. the Solar tower- as it was called was never built- the Eiffel was and stands tall in its l20th year, the oldest modern skyscraper.
