There were three reasons why Henry VIII wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon.
Henry VIII divorced Catherine of Aragon for many reasons. He thought that Catherine was fat and unatractive.
Henry knew that Catherine was unfit for having more children. They already had four children, two were stillborn (born dead) and their son, Edward died within a year. Only their daughter Mary survived. Henry desperatly needed a son to ensure a safe sucession. The last time England was ruled by a Female, there had been a civil war.( Queen Matilda,1135).
Henry had fallen in love with Anne Boleyn in 1526 but wouldn't sleep with her unless they were married.
Henry believed
believed ha had commited a sin against God by marrying Catherine. In a secton of The Bible that he had recently read, it said that God will punish you if you marry your brother's wife. Henry thought that God was punishing him by not giving him a legitimate son.
Henry also thought that Catherine would want to get their daughter Mary married. If Mary was married then England would go in dowry with her!!
Hope this helps,
Da Vinchi! :) :) :)
He didn't.
Catherine of Aragon was the wife of Henry VII's son, Henry VIII.
The marriage to Catherine was annulled a few months after Henry VIII married his second wife, Anne Boleyn, on the grounds that it had been unlawful for Henry to marry his brother's widow - not the same as a divorce.
Henry VIII divorced Catherine of Aragon because she couldn't bore him a son. Henry was desperate for a son because he thought if he didn't have a son he would be seen as a weak King and not a powerful one. After Henry divorced Catherine she married his older brother Arthur
Henry VIII divorced Catherine of Aragon because she reached an age where she could no longer reproduce. Henry, believing that his marriage was cursed, desperately began to look for a legal reason why his marriage should be annulled.
He turned to the Bible and and found an entry, which he interpreted to say that if a man marries his brother's wife, the couple will be childless. A strict interpretation of that Biblical passage meant that their marriage had been wrong in the eyes of God.
