Henry Ford wanted to design a popular car to meet public demand. On his third attempt at selling cars, he was able to sell a large number. The Model A (1903) and Model C (1904) were highly successful, but at $750 or more, they were still a luxury unaffordable by most families.
The Model T (1908) was the first mass-production vehicle, selling more than 16 million in 19 years. By adopting assembly line techniques, Model T's could be assembled in as little as 93 minutes. By the 1920's, their retail price averaged less than $400, making them affordable to the middle class.
