Henry needed a boy to succeed him as King after he died. Girls were allowed to succeed but the two previous times that this had happened in England had brought about trouble and warfare - this is what Henry feared, he wanted the Kingdom to be secure after he had gone, and wanted the Tudor legacy to continue. That is why his son Edward was King after him, even though he was the youngest of his children - He was only nine when he became king, Elizabeth was 13 at the time and Mary 27.
This rule of the Crown passing to boys first still exists today - Prince Charles will receive the crown after our current Queen, Elizabeth, then his sons William and Harry, even though there are females within the royal family who are older.

Even though he had a daughter, Queen Mary I, he wished to be succeeded by a son. He also knew how important it was to have a spare heir, being the spare himself, as to not leave England with a non-royal King. In the end, he had six wives, but only one son, King Edward IV, who died in his early teens, a daughter, Queen Mary I, and Queen Elizabeth I. Elizabeth ruled England for over forty years.
