First answer:

When creating the flag for his movement, Hitler sort to use 4 main aspects the colors of white, red and black and the symbol of the swastika. He is quoted as saying:

"As National Socialists, we see our program in our flag. In red, we see the social idea of the movement; in white, the nationalisticidea; in the swastika, the mission of the struggle for the victory of the Aryan man, and, by the same token, the victory of the idea of creative work, which as such always has been and always will be anti-Semitic."

Second improved answer:

The Swastika became the Nazi Symbol, however it was not exclusively used by the Nazis. This ancient pagan symbol, a Hakenkreuz (hooked cross), with various meanings to different cultures was usurped to symbolize "racial purity", "Aryan identity" or German nationalist pride by various extreme nationalist movements in Germany by 1920. See the website of the US Holocaust Museum for more information.

1924: Hitler dictates Mein Kampf (My Struggle) in prison. It lays out it his thoughts for Germany's future. It becomes a big seller after the start of the Great Depression (starting in late 1929).

In Mein Kampf, Hitler wrote of his efforts to perfect the swastika design: "… after innumerable attempts, had laid down a final form; a flag with a red background, a white disk, and a black swastika in the middle. After long trials I also found a definite proportion between the size of the flag and the size of the white disk, as well as the shape and thickness of the swastika."

In German it was called the Hakenkreuz or Hooked Cross- the word Swastika also used. the more-or-less cruciform orientation lent itself to being superimposed over the more familiar Maltese or Iron Cross- which was done commencing in l939- All Third Reich Iron crosses issued during the war are dated l939. also it has been argued this symbol with four right angles was a way to ( draw a circle with straight lines) or imply rotary motion that way. an automobile dealer in Detroit in the teens used a red , white and black Swastika as a trademark- this having no connection with Nazism. the motor company was called KRIT. Krit Motor car company. sometimes watch fobs turn up!

I'm not sure quite why he picked that, but in Another Country (honestly I can't remember which right now) it is a peace sign. Hitler switched the direction that is faces and so it is pretty much a backwards peace sign ... it fits...

The question is about the why of the swastika, not the where did it come from.Hitler and his staff were heavily into advertising and showmanship. The swastika, odal rune and sig runes were some of the symbols used. The thought was that simple "trade marks" would capture public attention and the use of "ancient" symbols would tie the Nazi efforts to times of the past where Nordic and Aryan heros defeated Germany's enemies.

Other efforts used devices such as the torch lit pageants, Wagner's music, eagle symbolism and designer made uniforms (by Hugo Boss) for the same purpose.
