Charles Curtis was the Republican leader in the US Senate. He was Hoover's competition for the nomination in 1932. He was a good party man, so the convention made him Hoover's running mate after Hoover won the nomination.

I do not think that Hoover particulary helped him get the nomination other than by not trying to stop it.
