Energy drinks have a lot of caffeine and sugar per serving and drinking many of them may have caused the reaction. The amount of sugar and caffeine in the drink stimulate your brain to stay awake and active. But, an overdose on caffeine, in particular, can cause the brain to become overly stimiluated. Hallucinations are more likely to occur when the body is over stimulated such as with caffeine or other drugs, during lack of sleep which is a direct reaction to caffeine as a stimulant, along with little or no food which can also result from drinking many highly-caffeinated drinks.

You should also be aware that caffeine constricts blood vessels, thereby raising heart rate and blood pressure. As you consume more and more caffeine-laden drinks, the body's circulatory system continues to react to the stimulant. You could experience an irregular heartbeat, palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, eyesight problems, severe headache, fainting, and if your body can't tolerate the high blood pressure that results, you could have a stroke or heart attack.

Hallucinating was a significant warning sign that your body could not tolerate the high amounts of caffeine. If you choose to use the drinks again in high amounts, the next "warning sign" could be much worse! You could end up in the ER rather than enduring a short hallucinatory reaction. As well, the hallucinations could be dramatically more severe than the one you already had.

Please be aware of the various products that contain caffeine and limit your intake. Do mention the reaction you had the next time you see a physician so that the Dr can carefully check your heart.

Does drinking a energy drink affect your reaction time?

Reaction time I'm not so sure about, but I know NERD The Focus & Energy Beverage contains focus/memory enhancers along with an energy blend so it keeps you energized and helps you focus. Reaction does decrease. An average of 10msec decrease was found in 19 people (p<0.05) using an online reaction time test.

Why did you have a bad hallucinating reaction to drinking a lot of energy drinks?

You can't hallucinate from drinking too many energy drinks, you will just get extremely sick. I have to disagree with this answer. My daughter, 19 years old, drank at least 2 - 4 5-hour engergy drinks a day for a few months. Against my warnings, she continued to do this. One night she started seeing invisible people. She is very intelligent, has never had anything like this happen to her before. She said there was a girl and boy in here. The girl was trying on and trying to take her clothes. She stood in front of her closet and talked to her, told her to get out of our house! And she took her Ugg boots out and brought them downstairs so the "girl" couldn't take them. She opened the front door and told them to get out !! It was the worst 24 hours of my life. I was so scared ! She talked to them for hours and hours. I stayed with her til she finally fell asleep. The next day she remembered all that had happened and said it felt like she had a dream. But it wasnt a dream, she was hallucinating. The only thing it could have been from was the energy drinks. Needless to say she doesnt want to ever see another one.
