Because the British kept the Indian people in really bad conditions. This was stopped and Inda gained independence from Britain when Ganshi decided to do something about it. He was a very patient man and also very brave. After he managed to make the British people go back to Britain, he became known as Mahatma Gandhi, and was respected among the Indian people.
