i think ist is because the structure of the road wasn't good anough so it collapsed.

The structure collapsed because the concrete was not reinforced. When the 6.9 earthquake struck the bay area, the supports were shaken to their breaking point, causing the top section and in some parts the entire structure to collapse. 42 people lost their lives in the collapse.

After the collapse, CalTrans demolished the structure, and rebuilt it as a single deck structure. I 880 reopened to traffic in 1995. The roadbed that once held I 880 now has the single deck Nelson freeway.
