Given the tactics used by the Israelis during the attack (unmarked aircraft, jammed radios, targeting antenna and gun mounts, firing 5 torpedoes, machine gunning life rafts in the water, helo-borne assault troops) quite possibly their intent was to sink the ship and kill all of the survivors in an effort to blame the Egyptians for the attack to get the US to enter the war on the side of the Israelis.

∙ 8y agoOn June 8 1967 an American ship was bombed near the Sinai peninsula. The USS Liberty was a technical Navy research ship. The Isareli Air Force and a Navy motor torpedo boats. This happened during the 6 day war and they said it was a mistake and they thought it was an Egyptian ship. All parties agreed that it was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the identity of the ship. The Israeli government paid 323,500 in compensation to the families of the 34 Americans that were killed. In 1969 they paid 3566,457 to the men who were wounded. On December 18, 1980 they paid 6 million for the final US bill of 17,132, 709 for material damage to the Liberty. They also paid 13 years interest.
