Kennedy was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his heroics in the rescue of the crew of PT 109, as well as the Purple Heart Medal for injuries sustained in the accident on the night of 1 August 1943. He did not however receive the congressional medal of honor.
JFK served in the US Navy during WWII, 1941-1945, commanding a PT Boat in the Solomons. He was awarded the medal for saving the lives of his fellow crewmates after contact with Japanese forces.
