They almost did. Within 6 months after landing 34 men were still alive from the 106 that landed. There was never suppose to be a "colony", but the men were sent to find gold for a group of investors. The ship landed in the worse place in the whole area and among a Native American kingdom of 15,000 people. The only thing that saved the colony was tobacco. John Rolfe introduced the plant to the area and saved it.
