Japanese army attacks SiberiaThey did in the far east, but in light of all of the following battles and various other theatres of the war it was not as dramatic or spectacular. Most of the fighting took place around a river called the Kholkin Gol(not sure on spelling) this was the name for the Russians the name for the Japanese was different don't know what it is. It is of note though that the Japanese high command called off all hostilites after Gen.zhuikov arrived and whipped the Far East Command into his vision and others like him in to the juggernaut they later would become. Through his implimentation of joint strike style ie(artillery, armor, infantry, and air power) he stopped all advances of the Japanese army in the far east district. It is in my own opinion that Zhuikov`s changes in the Far East Command later changed the tide of the battle at Stalingrad in which these same soldiers are the ones to eventually participated in the capture and destruction of the German 6th army.

Japan and Russia went to war in 1904-1905. Although victorious, Japan was deeply in debt, and the war had been a big drain on Japan's manpower and industrial systems (warships, ordinance, weapons, etc.). Japan and Russia (Soviet Union) fought again in 1939 at Nomonhan (Eastern Soviet Union). Japan took a severe beating during that military campaign; but it was also a wake up call to improve Japanese Armor (tanks), tactics, and infantry weapons. Although Japan had interests in Russia, as they did with China (which borders Russia), those two above mentioned wars convinced Japan that they did NOT want to fight Russia again, UNLESS THEY HAD TOO! Man takes the path of least resistance; and as long as there were easier "pickings", Japan would take those paths.

I am pretty sure that the russians wanted to colonise the northern island of Japan; Hokkaido. because at that time it had a lot of Natural Resources and rich river systems that-as you could tell-would be needed for anyone at that time. The Japanese (who did not quite have all the control over Hokkaido) also wanted to have the island, they had actually been fighting the natives before the era of the Samurai. The Japanese had no intention of giving in.

Extra Info~

It also effected the native Ainu People of japan who had be inhabiting hokkaido for 2000+ years, the russians & japanese were planning on killing all of the Ainu.

Which of the following do many historians consider to be Hitler's biggest mistake in world war 2?

Declaring war on the USA after Japan declared war on America. Germany declared war on America hoping Japan would declare war on Russia. Since Japan did not declare war on Russia (Russia would later declare war on Japan), Germany did not have to declare on America. If Germany had not declared war on the USA, America would have difficulty in declaring war on Germany (although USA and Germany naval vessels in the North Atlantic were shooting at one another in 1941). If Germany had not declared war on the USA, then Hitler would not have had to face the military men and equipment of America. Although Russia fought the majority of land battles against Germany, it was American men and equipment that helped Russia and Britain and other Allied nations to defeat Germany.
