The Wise men from the East had found out about a King who was to be born in Israel probably through some Old Testament prophecies they had read. It is thought that these men were also astrologers as well and had identified a star that would lead them to this "King of the Jews". In those days gifts were given to kings when they were visited, so they brought Jesus gifts.
He received three: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Because it's Jesus b-day and instead of giving gifts to him we give them to others and we receive gifts.
The shepherds did not give Jesus gifts. The wise men from the east gave Jesus gifts of gold, frankincence, and myrrh. He was about two years old when they came.
