Lazarus was well liked by all the Jews in the area but was a close friend to Jesus and his followers. He felt the remorse which all felt. This was put in to show the compassion that Jesus had.

Whether this story is true or not, it is a great story to teach each of us, regardless of what we think of religion, that we should have compassion and care for our fellow man.

Answer:

Jesus wept for the people's lack of faith and understanding of the God they professed... not for His sadness over Lazarus's death.

He was about to raise Lazarus out of death to reveal to these faithless people God's power and majesty. What was there about that to cry about?

Jesus wept for the "darkness" and "unbelief" in which the people lived.

"...'Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?' So they took away the stone.

"Then Jesus looked up and said, 'Father, I thank you that you have heard Me. I knew that you always heard Me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent Me." (John 11:40-42 NIV)

"...the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom [both the carnal minded result of the lack of divine understanding]: but we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; but unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the Power of God, and the Wisdom of God." (I Cor.1:22-24)

Jesus wept for the people's lack of understanding and belief... not for the loss of His friend Lazarus.

The resurrection of Lazarus was a pivotal teaching moment for those present. Martha and Mary, Lazarus's sisters told Jesus that he was sick. The sisters were convinced that Jesus would return to Bethany to heal Lazarus. That was not the case. After about two days, Jesus set out to go to Bethany. He was met by Mary and Martha and they told him that Lazarus had died. While speaking to Martha, Jesus used the opportunity to speak about the resurrection. (John 11:23-27) He was soon to give added meaning to his words. Upon arriving at the tomb or cave where Lazarus was interred, Christ ordered that the stone sealing its entrance be taken away. Then in prayer to his heavenly Father, Jesus showed that one reason these events were taking place was "in order that they[the crowd present] might believe that you sent me forth." (John 11:38-42) Jesus then called the dead Lazarus out of the tomb, and he emerged. Lazarus had been dead for 4 days, Jesus, a Jew had to call out to Lazarus. It would have been considered unclean for Jesus to enter the tomb. Thus, it was convincing evidence that Jesus was given the power and authority by God to resurrect the dead.

Answer/

Lazarus was in Hades, and so Jesus had to make his voice heard forcefully in order to summon Lazarus from that realm. Ref. Gospel of Nicodemus.

In prayer to his heavenly Father, Jesus showed that one reason these events were taking place was "in order that they [the crowd present] might believe that you sent me forth." (John 11:38-42) Jesus then called the dead Lazarus out of the tomb, and he emerged, undoubtedly to the astonishment and joy of those present. (John 11:43, 44) It was a token of the future resurrection that he had predicted on an earlier occasion in John 5:28,29.
