In 1948, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan's first Governor-General, declared in Dhaka that "Urdu, and only Urdu" would be the sole official language for all of Pakistan Muhammad Irfan Students of Virtual University of Pakistan.
I belive it is because Urdu is a mix of languages. It has words derived from Persian, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Pashto, etc. And, in some cases, vice-versa. I think its because a good majority could understand simple things. Also, it may be because of the fluidness and poetic culture of the language.

Just after Independence Pakistan did many things, it had to establish its Government, parliament, law and order. Then gradually started ,big reforms. Agrarian reform, canalization, irrigation. But one big mistake was done by M A Jinnah to impose Urdu (in 1947 a minor language in Pakistan) to be the only National Language of Pakistan.
Because Urdu is a language imposed to Pakistanis by M A Jinnah. Very little people (mostly Mohazers) talked and used this language in 1947. All provinces (Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, NW Frontier and East Pakistan) had their own basic languages. So Urdu was not popular at all in any provinces, though in 1948 Urdu was declared as the National Language of Pakistan.
Muhammad Jinnah was a very famous individual, especially in the region of Pakistan. Muhammad Jinnah was a lawyer, politician and was also the founder of Pakistan.
