I'm actually doing a project on John Flynn at the moment. Heres an answer to your question. The vast distances of the Territory and the lack of adequate medical facilities concerned Flynn and from 1917 onwards he founded a series of nursing services in remote locations. Taking advantage of the rapid development of aviation in the 1920s, Flynn was instrumental in the formation of the AIM Aerial Medical Service in 1928. The effectiveness of the service was ensured by the invention of the Traeger pedal radio in 1929. With several name changes, the AIM Aerial Medical Service became the Royal Flying Doctor Service in 1954. John Flynn
The founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, John Flynn, lived for almost 71 years. He was born on 25 November 1880 and he died on 5 May 1951.
John Flynn did not make the aeroplane that was first used for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. His actions is trying to establish an aerial medical service caught the attention of an Australian pilot serving in World War I, Clifford Peel, who wrote to Flynn, outlining the capabilities and costs of then-available planes. It remained for Flynn to use his fund-raising abilities to purchase an ex-WWI plane.
