King George was not in a colony. He was the ruler of Great Britain at the time. He was taxing the colonists to pay off his dept for the French and Indian War.

because, the French and Indian war was over and it cost a lot of money. King George the third thought that it wasn't fair that he had to pay everything when he and his army was protecting the colonists. He thought that it would be fair that the colonists pay him for things that came from Britain.
