King Herod sent the Magi to Bethlehem to find the baby they were looking for. He wanted them to come back and tell him where the baby was. He told them he wanted to know so he could worship him also, but he really planned to have him killed. The magi were warned in a dream, and so did not return to King Herod, but left another way.

Why was it a good decision not to tell Herod where Jesus was?

So that Herod wouldn't send his men to kill Him. They knew this because they received a warning in a dream, and they believed that warning, so they took a different route home. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The specific Bible verse is Matthew 1:13. When they [the Magi] had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." King Herod was a wicked man who feared the coming of the Messiah. Joseph received the same warning that the wise men received, advising them of Herod's desire to kill Jesus. In fact, Herod's cruelty is revealed in verse 16; When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he war furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. These quotations are from the New International Version Bible.

Why did pontius Pilate send Jesus to King Herod?

Pontius Pilate sent Jesus to King Herod because Herod was ruling over Galilee, where Jesus had come from. Pilate hoped that Herod could help resolve the situation and perhaps take responsibility for the matter. However, Herod eventually sent Jesus back to Pilate for a decision on his fate.

Why is it important that Mary Joseph and Jesus escaped to Egypt?

They escaped to Egypt to escape from King Herod because the Wise Men told him about Jesus (they didn't know they were putting him in danger he told them he would send presents and things)and he was jealus. God told the Wise men not to go back and tell King Herod because he would kill Jesus but King Herod then orded every new born to be killed.

How did king Herod react to the visit of the wise men?

This is in Matthew's Gospel. He asked them to return to Jerusalem and inform him about the baby Jesus. Surprisingly, he did not have the wise men followed or send spies to Bethlehem, so that even if the wise men reported back to him, he could have been unable to locate the house in which the baby Jesus lay. In the event, the wise men were warned in a dream and went home a different way, not going to Jerusalem. Joseph was warned in another dream, and fled to Egypt for fear of Herod. Then King Herod ordered all the infant boys under two years old to be slaughtered. John Shelby Spong (Born of a Woman: A Bishop Rethinks the Birth of Jesus) calls Matthew's story of the wise men Christian midrash. The flight to Egypt, Herod's Slaughter of the Innocents and the journey from Egypt to Nazareth were designed to help draw parallels between Moses and Jesus.

Does Mark tell the story of the birth of Jesus?

------------------------In Matthew's version of the birth of Jesus, Bethlehem was the home town of Joseph and Mary, as opposed to Luke's version which says that Nazareth was their home town. We can see this because the wise men found Jesus in a house, not a stable, and because when they were returning from Egypt they were returning to Bethlehem, but only turned aside and travelled to Nazareth because Joseph was warned to do so in a dream. So, for Matthew, there was no census and no journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem for that census. In Matthew, the angel appeared to Joseph, not Mary, to tell of the impending birth of Jesus. Of course, it would not make sense for both accounts to be true - the angel appearing to Mary and to Joseph, each time as if the angel was bringing news for the very first time - and perhaps by chance, Matthew chose one parent to receive the news and Luke chose the other. When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, magi (wise men) came from the east, following a star that took them to Jerusalem, where they enquired of King Herod where to find the baby born to be king of the Jews. Herod's chief priests and scribes said that the baby must be in Bethlehem, and Herod told the wise men to go and search diligently for the baby and to report back when they had found him. Strangely, Herod did not offer to have the wise men accompanied to their destination, send spies or have them followed, so that even if the wise men did report back, it could have been unclear which unmarked house held the baby Jesus. The star confirmed the advice of the chief priests and scribes by turning back on itself and leading the magi to Bethlehem, where it stood over the very house where Jesus lay. The wise men entered and fell down and worshipped Jesus, then presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The second dream in this story has the magi warned not to return to Herod, so they went back another way.In yet another dream, an angel warned Joseph of impending danger, so he fled with Mary and Jesus to safety in Egypt. After the death of Herod, an angel appeared in a dream to Joseph, telling him to take his young family back to Bethlehem. On the way back, this time God warned Joseph in a dream that there was still danger in Judea, so he turned aside and travelled to Nazareth instead. When Herod realised the wise men were not returning, he ordered all the baby boys under two years old in and around Bethlehem to be slaughtered, hoping to kill the baby born to be king of the Jews.Matthew omits the story of the poor shepherds who, in Luke's Gospel, came to worship Jesus, no doubt because the author was unaware of this. This gospel also omits the presentation of Jesus at the Temple, and the stories of Simeon and Anna who recognised him as the future Messiah. The Temple story would have been entirely out of place in an account in which Herod sought to find and kill Jesus in Bethlehem.
