Why is cork known as the rebel county?
Cork is nicknamed "The Rebel County", as a result of the support of the townsmen of Cork in 1491 for Perkin Warbeck, a pretender to the throne of England during the Wars of the Roses. The common misperception of Cork's nickname of The Rebel County is that it derives from a strong connection with the fight for freedom from British occupation of Ireland. In fact, the origin of the name relates to Cork's participation in internal British conflict several centuries earlier. The name was used again at the time of the War of the Two Kings. In later years the term did come to refer more to the struggle against the British than to the Warbeck affair from which it had originally derived, as this had been largely forgotten by that time.

Therefore some have argued that it was not 1485 that the Wars of the Roses finished, but possibly as late as 1525 with the death of Richard de la Pole.

Lambert Simnel was defeated at the Battle of Stoke in 1487, however Henry VII showed mercy towards him and instead of executing him, made him a royal servant, working as spit-turner in the royal kitchens. He eventually became the King's falconer. Perking Warbeck was defeated after the second Cornish rebellion in 1497. He was placed under house arrest for a time at Taunton and was then sent to the Tower of London after attempting to escape. In 1499, he was accused of plotting treason with the Earl of Warwick who was also in the Tower and was executed.
