Abraham Lincoln did not end slavery. Congress did with the 13th Amendment. Lincoln only created the Emancipation Proclamation to "free" the slaves in the ten states (and only those states) that were still in rebellion.
Before the war Lincoln just wanted to stop the spread of slaves, believing states that already had slave should be able to keep their slaves.(that's totally not cool for some one that wanted to put an end to slavery) During the war, Lincoln at first didn't want his generals to free slaves in the south and only later did so to weaken the Confederacy. Don't be confused and think the Emancipation Proclamation freed all slaves, it only freed slaves in the Confederacy to weaken their defenses. Lincoln said it himself the would continue with slavery, free all the slaves or just free some as long as it preserved the Union.
But the 13th Amendment made slavery illegal throughout all the United State
my guess is that he thought it was unconstitutional to enslave the black population although Lincoln did not believe the blacks should have equal rights which was also unconstitutional Lincoln may also have seen slavery and its brutality which made him hate it but I'm not entirely sure
If anyone knows the real reason please write it below this scentence
He believed it was morally wrong. He once said "it is the duty of every government to give protection to its citizens, of whatever class, colour and condition"

Because as a child Abraham Lincoln had slaves on his farm and he hated the idea of living people getting whipped and beaten for labor !
