Because he really was a brave and honorable soldier in the beginning of the play. He was a loyal soldier to King Duncan.

Only afterwards when the ambition got to his head did he actually start killing people so that he could become King.

The prophecies predict that he will soon die (the woods of Birnam wood march upon him, Macduff was technically not born of a woman and thus is capable of killing Macbeth) although he believes he will soon die he faces his death and does not just accept it.

Macbeth, as you probably know is a Thane (Lord) under King Duncan of Scotland. Basically, Macbeth and his close friend Banquo defeat a whole army opposing the King at the beginning of the play, and Macbeth is honoured by King Duncan by being made Thane of not only Glamis (already his land) but of Cawdor as well.

By displaying Macbeth as this brave and loyal warrior, Shakespeare manages to gain our sympathies for him at the beginning of the play - and shows us that before the idea of becoming King was put into his head by the witches, he was actually a fine and faithful subject.
