Because his wife convinced him that he would gain much power. Without her poor influences he probably would not have killed Duncan. he was said to be very loyal, but he never gave off the vibe that he liked the King, and how he was ruling.

Through a series of events.

He plotted the murder of King Duncan, and pretended that his drunken guards had done it, then killed the guards to show how 'angry' he was.

However, Duncan's sons (Malcolm and ... The other one) saw that this was a plotted murder and fled the country.

Since the two heirs to the thrones were gone, Macbeth was crowned king, since he had fought well at the battle in the start if the play, the King loved him, he had avenged the king, and was seen fit to have the throne.

Macbeth becomes Thane of Cawdor as recognition of his achievements in battle. We are told he killed the previous Thane of Cawdor, who was a traitor by "unseeming him from the nave to the chaps" - as such he inherits the traitors land and title

In Act 1 Scene 3 of the Shakespearean play, the three witches predicted a future as Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland for Macbeth [c. 1014-August 15, 1057]. Macbeth's initial reaction was surprise, shock, fear, and disbelief. But he got used to the idea of such glorious career moves. Nevertheless, he still couldn't come up with any really good reasons for why he should be, or even should want to be, King. In Scene 7, he pinpointd his 'vaulting ambition' [Line 27]. But he even managed to reject that reason, until his wife's arguments got the better of him. So ultimately, Macbeth wanted to be King, because he and his Lady [b. c. 1015] were ambitious and particularly because his wife wanted them to claim the throne of Scotland. But according to the historical record, there may have been other reasons for Macbeth's royal dreams. He was the son or grandson of the daughter of King Malcolm II [d. November 25, 1034] of Scotland. Through his mother's family line, he therefore descended from the renowned King Kenneth I [810-February 13, 858] of Scotland. Additionally, his wife was named Gruoch ingen Boite. The 'Boite' referred to her status as daughter of Beodhe aka Boite [b. 988], Prince of Scotland. Beodhe/Boite likewise was a descendant of the renowned Kenneth MacAlpin. So both Macbeth and his Lady had legitimate claims to the throne of Scotland.
