The grocery store shelves were about bare, the people did not have sufficient good nor clothing, and the idea that the people who had plenty would be made to share with the less fortunate sounded good to the proleteriat. The Communist motto, from he who has it will be given and from he who has not, it will be received was exciting and a security to those who could not make it on their own.

Through the years there are always "new ideas" that appeal to one group or the other, and the manifesto of Karl Marx was appealing for a time, until it was realized that Marx or communism was not the answer. Next along comes Stalin, and he too bit the dust. Learning from history means grasping that these economic theories just do not work, and that capitalism is the optimum and most fortunate economic system that was ever tried in the United States.

Why did Germany lose the most people in world war 1?

They didn't lose the most people in WWI. The Russians did and that's because they had the most people to lose. Russia didn't care who died. They didn't have upgraded weaponry to defend or attack. On the Russian field, 1 out of 10 guns would work. The idea was that no matter how many Russians were killed, the other countries would run out of people first.
